Baztan Valley Spain, Vintage Swedish Mid Century Modern Style Landscape, Contemporary, Impressionist Plein Air Oil Painting

$320.00

Baztan Valley, Spain

This is a fine art original painting by me, Alexandra Swistak.

This miniature atmospheric plein air painting is executed with loose, expressive brush work and yet there is much realistic detail. Directional, energetic brushstrokes create texture as the composition comes into focus. The color choices are unexpected but also delightfully sophisticated. Thick and barely visible outlines invite the viewer to linger and take in the rich details of this scene.

The carved frame is possibly from Bali and included. This handmade frame showcases an artisanal skill but also unique imperfections that are a natural result of the human touch and manual processes, adding character and authenticity that mass-produced frames lack. It is a magnificent choice for this landscape that was executed outdoors in the hills of Baztan, Spain.

I spend a great deal of time to ensure the listing is accurate. This tiny painting was very difficult to photograph. The listing photos taken in natural light. There is also a scanned image included. Please contact me if more photos or a video is required.

Note: This painting is also signed on the back. The backing is glass, which allows the signature, date and title to remain visible.

The Flemish Renaissance, Mughal portraiture, Impressionism, Classicism and Cubism are references for my work. Each painting unfolds from observation, and an intuitive narrative. However, the style itself is not a conscious choice in my practice; it is the result.

A painting seldom begins and ends on one panel. A vision begins in the representational form but the moment it shifts towards the abstract; I begin work on multiple substrates. The unpredictability of these in-between states are fully explored. The work spills organically and grows in any direction similar to the roots of a plant. Thus, most representational paintings become triptychs or diptychs containing an abstract companion piece. One aspect always underscores and engages the other with an ultimate aim to provide an overall indulgent reprieve from the rituals of daily life.

(The artist actively exhibits her paintings from Bergdorf Goodman, New York to the UK. Her work is collected internationally and she keeps studios in Canada, France, Japan and India.)
