Description
This is a painting within a painting.
The honeycomb shaped quilt is an irresistible reference to bees that is common in my work for bee conservation. There are precious china collectibles on the side table that Jane Austen may’ve enjoyed in her time.
A 2 month old whippet is looking directly at the viewer.
There are 4 Sailors’ valentines, which were made of seashells between 1830 and 1890 as souvenirs, or sentimental gifts. They were typically octagonal shaped and brought home from a sailor’s voyage at sea and given to loved ones. This is a nod to Jane Austen as her brother had an illustrious maritime career. There is a portrait of Jane Austen and portrait of lady with crown from an established collection that I am known for. There is a third painting of Cut Outs by Matisse.
This scene is full of sumptuous motifs and symbols that often appear in my work and are for the delight and interpretation of the viewer.
This study was painted to form a large oil painting that has sold. I often paint small studies in oils or gouache. See Tate to learn about the gouache medium. You may also commission a painting at no extra cost, please contact me if you have any questions.
