‘Recorte’
A striking mid-century modern, expressionist style painting that captures a mock bullfight.
There is an emphasis on shape and form although there is much detail from the spectators in the distance to the Matador’s embellished clothing.
This is a modern take on a very traditional scene. The color palette is limited but also rich and has depth. There is an illusion of movement and theatrics. I’ve attended numerous mock bullfights in Spain and I continue to paint the scene.
Overall, it’s a well executed example of capturing mood and energy in a painting through clever brushwork. It’s thick and spontaneously directional in some areas.
Size: 11 x 14 inch
Medium: oil paint on wood panel
The gold leaf wood frame is included and is a lovely finishing touch for this magnificent painting.
The Flemish Renaissance, Mughal portraiture, Impressionism, Classicism and Cubism are references for my work. Each painting unfolds from observation, and an intuitive narrative. However, the style itself is not a conscious choice in my practice; it is the result.
A painting seldom begins and ends on one panel. A vision begins in the representational form but the moment it shifts towards the abstract; I begin work on multiple substrates. The unpredictability of these in-between states are fully explored. The work spills organically and grows in any direction similar to the roots of a plant. Thus, most representational paintings become triptychs or diptychs containing an abstract companion piece. One aspect always underscores and engages the other with an ultimate aim to provide an overall indulgent reprieve from the rituals of daily life.
(The artist actively exhibits her paintings from Bergdorf Goodman, New York to the UK. Her work is collected internationally and she keeps studios in Canada, France, Japan and India.)
